READING RESPONSES

We are becoming more skilled at doing our reading responses on "Explain Everything' on the ipads.

SPRING

We walked around the school and looked for signs of spring. We are lucky to have kowhai trees in our grounds and the tui love them.
We have been learning to use verbs to make our writing more descriptive.

We are also learning to search for an image and  add it to
our writing on 'Explain Everything.'

MORE SCIENCE...

This week we have carried out some more light experiments.

We pulled the curtains in the whare kai to make it dark.
Next we  aimed our torches at the blank side of a CD.
We found that a rainbow reflected onto the white wall.
The white light from the  torch is made up of seven colours. The CD separates the white light into the seven colours. They then reflect onto the wall.
A CD is made of aluminium and is covered with a clear coat of plastic. There are ridges in the metal which the light reflects off.

We also put a mirror in a shallow tray of water and saw again the colours of the rainbow reflected on our ceiling.

Measurement

This term we have been learning to order and compare objects by length, mass and capacity.

This week we measured and compared objects by capacity.

We estimated how many cups each container would hold, then measured carefully.
Our group is measuring how many cubes would fit in each container.
Mere is counting how many teddy bears fir in the container.

Visual Art

Come in and check our great art. First we used water colours to paint  a beach scene background of sea and sand.
Next we painted a lot of papers in bright colours.  From these we cut out objects to paste onto our backgrounds.

You will be able to order calendars, diaries, cards and other cool things next term.

LIGHT

This term we are learning about Light and Colour. This week we carried out these experiments and this is what we found.

We looked to see what happened when we put a straw in a glass of water.
The straw looked bent but it wasn't. The light was bending.

When we look at a straw in a glass of water, light from the top of the straw travels straight to the eye.
Light from the part that is under the water is refracted when it goes from the water into the air. It changes direction.
That is why the straw looks bent.

In groups of three, one held a torch and shone it on a mirror which someone else was holding. Our third person was holding a piece of white paper which was our screen.
We found that the light travelled in a straight line to the  mirror and then reflected off the mirror onto the screen.

Principal's Award

Congratulations to Mark for receiving Mrs Lindsay's Principal's award at assembly on Friday, for his excellent progress  and effort in Reading.

Reading Responses

AJ read the book "The Zachary's Plans" in which a lot of amazing houses were designed.
Here is the house which AJ designed and wrote about on Explain Everything on an ipad.

Zara read a story called "The Halfway Party." On an ipad  Zara wrote about the problem that occurred in the story and how the problem was solved. She also took a photo of an illustration in her book.

Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk

Last week we enjoyed watching  the New Zealand Playhouse production of Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk.
It was based on the fairy Tale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.  We watched Jack's quest to save the environment as the play had a theme of reuse and recycle.
You can see from the photos how much we loved it.

I liked the part when the actors got hit with the bag of rubbish that the giant threw at the people at the bottom of the garden, The actors were great and funny.     Zara

Money Week

This week is New Zealand's Money Week. We are learning how we can make up amounts of money using different coins. We made these amounts on the ipads.
